Palm Oil Good Oil, Bad Oil?
Specific Purpose Statement: To inform my audience about Palm Oil Good Oil, Bad Oil?
Pattern of Organization: Topical Order
I. INTRODUCTION:
A. Attention Grabber: (Play slideshow on computer.) Is palm oil good for you but bad for the planet? Is it bad for you, but good for developing nation?
B. Reveal Topic: I will be talking about palm oil good oil, bad oil? You decide.
C. What is Palm Oil: Do you know that palm oil is edible plant oil derived from the pulp of the fruit of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis).
II. BODY
[Transition: The first thing that I would like you to know about palm oil is a big business.]
A. Main Point 1: Palm oil covers 4.5 million hectares in Malaysia. Malaysia is pumping out 20 million tons of palm oil a year.
1. The oil palm industry is also a major employer. It employs half a million of people in Malaysia.
2. It earns about RM60 billion a year. It is about 17 billion USD.
3. Palm oil produces more oil than others. Olive oil produced a thousand liters per hectare, but palm oil produced 6 thousand liters per hectare.
[Transition: Do you know that there is one sector of world population that is not a big fan of oil palm, the environmental group. Now, let us take a look at this video made by the environmental group against palm oil industry.]
B. Main Point 2: What do you think after watching this video?
1. They blamed palm oil industry is the cause of the extinction of endangered animals especially orang utan.
2. They also think that palm oil contributes to global warming.
[Transition: But, palm oil industry fights back.]
C. Main Point 3: They argued that planting of oil palm is not the primary cause of deforestation. Instead, it is the global demand for timber that causing the large scale of land clearing.
1. They also think that producing bio-fuel from palm oil can help reducing gas emission.
2. Palm oil can be converted into fatty alcohol and fatty ester to substitute the petroleum.
[Transition: You all must want to know if palm oil good for you.]
D. Main Point 4: Do you know that there are two types of cholesterol. LDL, low density lipoprotein which is known as the bad cholesterol in our blood and HDL, high density lipoprotein which is the good cholesterol in our blood.
1. These lipoproteins transport fat to our body. The LDL allow fat to squeeze to our cells when we don’t want it.
2. In the past, we’ve been told that palm oil is so much worse than other oil. But, to prove this statement, research had been made.
3. There are two groups of people having different diet. One is palm oil diet and the other is olive oil diet.
4. The palm oil and olive oil diet shown that the total cholesterol of HDL and LDL remains about the same in two groups. So, we can conclude that palm oil diet just as good as olive oil diet.
5. But do remember that too much fat is not good for you.
[Transition: Now, I want to tell you that palm oil is an alternative to trans-fat]
E. Main Point 5: Trans-fat is a man-made fat. It reduces the good cholesterol in the body and increases the bad one.
1. This will increase the risk of heart disease.
2. Palm oil is suitable to replace trans-fat in food because its ability to withstand high temperature and last a long time in the fryer.
[Transition: Lastly, I want to tell you how palm oil industry goes green.]
F. Main Point 6: With using natural pest control to replace man-made insecticide such as barn owl to control rodents, or microorganisms to combat insects, the result is to reduce the huge use of chemicals in palm oil plantation.
1. Rather than simply burning plant waste that contributes to the problem of global warming, scientists had seen the benefits of recycling palm oil waste by doing compose which able to prevent the release of methane which is also one of the green house gases.
SUMMARY:
Palm oil has the potential to offer the world a lot. The next time you go to the supermarket, visit a restaurant, take a shower, or even wash your clothes, it is very likely that you are using palm oil products.
CONCLUSION:
We cannot judge that palm oil is good or bad for us and even the environment. For me, what we can do is that we do what we think is right and try to give some love in saving our Mother Earth.

Is palm oil good for you but bad for the planet? Is it bad for you, but good for developing nation? I will be talking about palm oil good oil, bad oil? You decide.
Do you know that palm oil is edible plant oil derived from the pulp of the fruit of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis). The oil palm, a species native to Africa, looks like another tropical palm. Oil palm can only be grown at a specific climatic condition in tropical country like Malaysia and Indonesia. Palm oil is widely use as a cooking oil. Palm oil is present in 1 in 10 products found in grocery stores.
